African-American Literature E5AA or E6AA

This course is a junior level survey of African-American literatue from its inception to the present, as well as an introduction to African-American literary criticism and cultural studies. We will discuss a wide array of poetry, plays, novels, and essays, considering them within their historical moment. We will also trace the distinctive tradition of African-American rhetoric and consider the cultural origins and political effects of that rhetoric.

Course Objectives:
1. To provide students with a historically-grounded survey of African-American literature.
2. To introduce students to African-American literary and cultural studies as well as to African-American rhetorical traditions.
3. To enhance students' abilities to analyze and interpret literary texts.
4. To enhance students' research, writing, and public speaking skills.

This course is open to all juniors. This course is offered in both the fall and spring semesters,but may only be taken for one term.
