This class incorporates the study of poetry with the writing of poetry. We will read classic and contemporary poems in order to learn techniques for our own writing. We will study Shakespeare's sonnets, sestinas, villanelles, blank verse, found poetry and alphabet poems. Students will submit a poem a week, work in revision groups, memorize and recite poems to the class. A poetry reading will be held at the end of the term in the library. Anyone with a keen interest in poetry is welcome. The course is taught as a workshop, which means that students write and read their work to one another in class. Poetry is offered in both the spring and fall semesters.
