The Stuyvesant High School Online Course Guide

Writers Workshop E5WW or E6WW - E7WW or E8WW

Anyone wanting to write should take this course. We will practice a variety of styles of writing, and learn to write with honesty and power. We will draw from models in classic and contemporary fiction (including Tim OBrien's The Things They Carried), as well as the work of other students, in examining the ingredients of an effective narrative (image, setting, detail, plot, dialogue, authentic voice, conflict, character development, etc.). Active participation, writing every day, and a willingness to experiment are essential. The course culminates in a portfolio of written work.

This course is open to all juniors and seniors who are willing to read a variety of work and to be part of a supportive group of writers. This course is offered in both the fall and spring semesters. The fall semester will focus on the short story; the spring semester will include a unit on playwriting.
