The Stuyvesant High School Online Course Guide |
Anyone wanting to write should take this course. We will learn to write with honesty and power. Learning to pull together the ingredients of an effective narrative (i.e. image, setting, detail, plot, dialogue, authentic voice, conflict, character development, etc.) is one of the goals of the course. If you take this course, you will be expected to write every day. Another mandatory assignment will be to do outside reading (2-3 books from a recommended list). Major assignments include one short story (typed and double-spaced) and one section of a novel (15 pages minimum, typed and double-spaced). In order to complete the course, all assignments must be handed in on time.
How is this course taught you ask?, you ask. Most days we write. Numerous assignments and exercises are given, designed to trigger access to the rich, powerful material inside each of us. Some days we read the work of great writers, but also the work of one another. This course demands from the student a willingness to be honest, to take risks on the page, to be part of a supportive group of writers. This one term course is offered during both the fall and spring semesters.
