The Stuyvesant High School Online Course Guide

Asian American Literature E7HA or E8HA

Any student interested in learning about Asian American life as it is reflected in the literature created by Asian American authors, in the social manifestations of assimilated and not so assimilated Asian Americans, in the social history of Asian American life, and to some extent, the roots of Asian identity as expressed in literature should take this course.

We will look at the literature and at ourselves. You will be expected to do supplementary reading and report your impressions. You will be expected to explore some of the vast riches of Asian culture available in our city--from the Astor Court at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to institutions like the Asia Society, the Japan Society, the Korea Society. You will be invited to "show and tell about" some of your own culture. You will be encouraged to share your views in class. You will be asked to write those views down in several short papers that combine elements of memoir and analysis.

The course is taught typically through extensive class discussions. In an important sense, students are themselves a key resource. You will teach one another so that cross cultural comparisons and contrasts can be made. This course is offered in both the fall and spring semesters.
