The Stuyvesant High School Online Course Guide

Philosophy: E7PH or E8PH

In this course, we learn about philosophy by doing it. We read the works of some of the most exciting minds in Western and Eastern philosophy, not only to find out what they thought the good life was or what justice should be, but to think through these issues with them. By exploring what it means to be excellent human beings and excellent citizens, what it takes to create a community wherein law might be reconciled with morality, we cultivate those skills of careful reading, writing, speaking and listening which enable us to examine our lives and learn what makes them worth living.

Readings will include selections from the works of such authors as Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, John Stuart Mill, Locke,Thoreau, Maugham, and Ibsen.
