Advanced Placement in English Literature and Composition:

British Literature - Society and Self

E75X and E86X

Overview: Individuals define themselves in the context of wider social forces - religious, economic, political, material and technological. Literature is in a unique position to creatively articulate this complex struggle. This course will concentrate on literature from Great Britain (an island nation with an imperialist history) and the chronological approach will allow us to explore how the demands of self and society change and/or remain the same (along with the literary forms documenting such changes) as we move forward. Society and Self is considered an Advanced Placement course, and students are encouraged to take the Advanced Placement Literature and Composition exam in the spring.

Works studied may include:

First term: Beowulf, Canterbury Tales, Hamlet, the poetry of William Blake (and possibly other Romantics),Persuasion, and Madame Bovary.

Second term: Heart of Darkness/The Secret Sharer, A Passage to India, To the Lighthouse, The Heart of the Matter, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Disgrace, and White Teeth.

Format: The class is largely discussion-based. Students enrolling in the course should expect to complete a substantial reading assignment each evening and to participate in the class discussions on a daily basis.

Applicants must have at least a 92% English average.
