The Stuyvesant High School Online Course Guide |
Who should take this
course?
The course is designed for students
who have successfully completed French Level IV. Its objectives are
to provide proficiency in the fundamental language skills that enable
the students to read and understand prose and verse of moderate
difficulty and mature content; to formulate and express critical
opinions and judgements in correct oral and written French. The
course also emphasizes the student's ability to read and analyze
critically, and to discuss perceptively representative works of
French literature.
What will we be studying?
We read the works from the required
reading list designed by the College Board. The list includes three
plays: Beaumarchais' Le Mariage de Figaro; Giraudoux' La Guerre de
Troie n'aura pas lieu, and Molière's L'Ecôle des femmes,
three novels: Voltaire's Candide, Maupassant's Pierre et Jean, Ba's
Une si longue lettre, as well as poems by Apollinaire, Baudelaire,
Labé and Ronsard.
How is the course
The course is taught entirely in
French. To strengthen the students' writing skills in literary
criticism, workshops are conducted.
What are the completion
requirements?
The students are expected to do the
assigned readings and to participate in class discussions in addition
to passing class exams and writing a 1-2 page paper at the completion
of each work.
Are there any special demands,
costs, etc?
Yes. Most students are expected to
take the Advanced Placement exam which costs $72.00.
