The Stuyvesant High School Online Course Guide |
Who should take this
course?
This course is designed for students
who have successfully completed four years of Spanish. The A. P.
Spanish Literature program is designed to prepare students to
understand lectures in Spanish and to participate actively in
literary discussions in Spanish; to perform a close reading of modern
Hispanic literary texts in all genres; to analyze critically the form
and content of literary works, both orally and in writing, using
appropriate terminology. This course is intended to replace the
equivalent of a third- year college "Introduction to Hispanic
Literature" course, covering selected works from the literatures of
Spain and Latin America.
What will we be studying?
The A.P. Spanish Literature course is comparable
to a third-year college introduction to Hispanic literature course. It is based
on a required reading list. The works on the list are of literary significance
and represent various historical periods, literary movements, genres, geographic
areas, and population groups within the Spanish-speaking world. The objective
of the course is to help students interpret and analyze literature in Spanish.
Some of the topics explored include: the picaresque noel, Medieval and Renaissance
literature, Golden Age theater, the Romantic period, the Generation of 1898,
the Generation of 1927, and 20th Century (Peninsular) Spanish and Latin American
literature. Cervantes, Garcilaso de la Vega, Tirso de Molina, Quevedo, Gongora,
Federico Garcia Lorca, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Jorge Luis Borges, Pablo Neruda,
Antonio Machado, and Miguel de Unamuno are among the 38 authors included in the
A.P. Spanish Literature reading list. Guest speakers will include writers, representatives
from cultural institutions such as the Cervantes Institute, the Americas Society and university
professors.
What will be expected of
me?
Students will be required to write at least
one literary analysis paper during each marking period and they will also have an
opportunity to write original works inspired by the authors studied.
Students are expected to be considerably proficient in Spanish and should have a strong
desire to read and explore Hispanic literature.
How is the course taught?
The course is taught entirely in
Spanish. Lectures, group activities, class projects, and individual
and group presentations are used to further strengthen the student's
knowledge and understanding of the literary topics covered in the
course. Former students have participated in events, such as
Neruda Week, the Madrid Memorial, and a round table with Isabel Allende,
discussing her latest novel. These events received media coverage
and can be looked up online.
What are the completion
requirements?
The students are expected to
complete all assigned readings and to actively participate in class
discussions. In addition, students are expected to pass all
examinations, and to complete all written and oral
assignments.
Are there any special demands,
costs, etc?
Yes. Students are expected to take
the A. P. Spanish Literature Examination. They will also be required
to make copies of their poems and short stories for class
distribution. Several theaters in the New York City perform some of
the plays studied in the course, students are encouraged to attend
these performances on their own at their own expense. Admission
tickets cost an average of ten dollars per person.
