The Stuyvesant High School Online Course Guide

Symphonic Band UDPPSB

Who should take this course?

This course is for students who are accomplished on wind, brass or percussion instruments.

What will we be studying?

The main objective of this course is the mastery of the most challenging works of the band repertoire (NYSSMA levels IV through VI). Stress is placed on tone production, phrasing, dynamics, ensemble, breath control, expression, and intonation.

How is the course taught?

All classes meet daily for full credit. Students are expected to attend rehearsals on time daily, unless excused by their teacher. Students are also expected to participate in all concerts, including graduation, and in special after-school, pre-concert rehearsals, if necessary. Sufficient notice will be given in order to plan for these events.

Are there any special demands, costs, etc?

Students are asked to support Music Department activities by attending recitals, master classes and concerts. We also ask that students assist in selling tickets to departmental events.

Details and pre/co-requisites:

Successful progress in the Symphonic Band program exempts students from Music Appreciation (U1), as well as fulfills the Stuyvesant High School senior (10 period) Technology requirement. Admission into the Symphonic Band is by audition, only.
