Opera Studies UNOP & Opera As Drama UNOD

UNOP is the first part of opera studies and UNOD is the second part.

Who should take this course?

Students who have an interest in music and drama will find these courses very interesting. Both single term courses will analyze the very special relationship between drama and music, which is the essence of opera. Seniors who have not yet completed their music appreciation requirement may do so by taking Opera Studies.

What will we be studying?

Operatic masterpieces by composers such as Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, Strauss and Britten will be studied utilizing videos, recordings, scores and librettos. Pertinent aspects of musical/dramatic performance will also be examined.

What will be expected of me?

Most of the course work will be done in class, and class participation is very important. Students will be asked to attend an operatic performance as a final project. Both aspects of the opera and the performance seen will be analyzed. This project may be done in groups.

What are the completion requirements?

The students must complete their final project, participate in class and perform satisfactorily on class exams.

Are there any special demands, costs, etc?

Students will be asked to purchase an inexpensive opera ticket.

How is the course taught?

We will study operas utilizing videos, recordings, scores and librettos. Pertinent aspects of performance and style will also be examined. If possible, scenes will be enacted dramatically in class.

Students should have successfully completed music appreciation (U1) or the equivalent.UNOP is the prerequisite for UNOD.
