The Stuyvesant High School Online Course Guide |
Who should take this course?
This course is aimed at students who already know music theory. The student should be able to read trebble and base clef. Keyboard skills are optional but definetely a plus. In addition, the student should know all the major and minor scales, intervals, time aignatures and have a basic knowledge of harmony.
What will we be studying?
We will be studying pitch intervals, modes, major and minor triads and their inversions, simple harmonic cadences, introduction to figured bass, voice leading and basics of orchestration. Ear training is an important part of this course as it is on the A.P. Exam in Music Theory. We will cover melodic dictation, rhythmic dictation, sight singing and some harmonic dictation. There will be a strong emphasis on student composition and in-class performance of student work.
What will be expected of me?
The student is expected to complete assigned workbook exercises and composition assignments on time. If the student plays an instrument or sings, he/she is expected to participate in performances of student compositions.
How is the course taught?
This is a one year course. Classes are held everyday. Each day we focus on one aspect of music theory, e.g. "student composers forum", workbook assignments, melodic and rhythmic dictation, concepts of music theory and writing for all the families of orchestral instruments. We hope to have guest presenters from the professional music world. Also, from time to time, we will focus on such non-traditional music topics as improvisation, MIDI composition and an introduction to music recording technology.
What are the completion requirements?
The A.P. Exam in Music Theory, offered in May, is strongly recommended. For students who do not take the A.P. test, there will be an alternative classroom test.
Are there any special demands, costs, etc?
Students need to purchase a theory workbook. At this point, the cost is not known but is approximately $65.00.
Details and pre/co-requisites:
The student who has not taken Music Appreciation or does not play in a Stuyvesant band or orchestra will be required to take a short evaluation exam or obtain Department Chairperson approval.
