The Stuyvesant High School Online Course Guide |
Who should take this course?
Students who enjoy singing and music of many differing styles, periods and languages should audition.
What will we be studying?
This course is designed to improve voice production and to teach the essentials of individual and ensemble singing. Basic vocal fundamentals are taught through a series of vocalizes, drills, and the study of standard choral literature. The problems studied in the exercises and drills are given application in the selected samples of choral literature.
What will be expected of me?
Students accepted into the Concert Chorus commit themselves through the end of senior year. Accommodations to individual programming problems will be dealt with on a case by case basis. Students are assigned folders and music, and are responsible for their safe keeping. Concert Chorus meets daily. Students are expected to participate in all concerts, including Graduation, and in special after-school, pre-concert rehearsals, if necessary.
How is the course taught?
The main objective of this course is to teach students about singing choral music intelligently with a true measure of accomplishment, culminating in a public performance at the end of the term. Stress is placed on study of tone production, phrasing, dynamics, breath control, diction, expression, pitch, intonation, and proper stylistic elements. The primary goal is to achieve an artistic and effective performance.
