It is the intent of the Biology and Geo-Science Department to offer courses containing the most current and pertinent content and concepts in science. To this end, we offer elective courses that are both career oriented and courses for the student who has a generally high interest in science. Every basic, intermediate and advanced elective course contains a laboratory component which increases interest in the course and provides for a hands-on experience and practical skill in the content area. The Biology and Geo-Science curriculum is separated into 4 major sections. The Required Course for graduation is Regents Biology. We also offer a Biological Science Career Program which contains laboratory courses which are pre-requisites for Advanced Placement Biology. Please note that taking a course in one career program does not limit the student to that program for subsequent course choices. Students who have decided to go into the field of medicine, should investigate our Medical Careers Program and the special courses designed to prepare students to do an Hospital Internship at one of our local hospitals. For those students interested in Environmental Studies, we offer college level courses in Environmental Science, Meteorology, Oceanography and Geology. Two of these classes use our meteorological satellite weather downlink and interpret weather photos real-time. Selective Courses in the department are those classes which need departmental approval. These courses require more time in school or after school and are for students with exceptional skills in organization, writing and inter-personal communication. Courses include Research in Biology, Research in Psychology and Research in Geo-Science each of which leads the students into a project which is entered into the Intel Science Talent Search. Also included are courses in Advanced Placement Biology and Advanced Placement Psychology and an Internship in our local hospitals. Major student publications, sponsored by the department, include the Bio-Med Times and the Environment Times. These have consistently won high awards in Scholastic Press competitions. Another major magazine, The Journal of Student Science Research, reports abstracts of the science research projects performed by students in the Intel Science Talent Search classes. The department hosts several extracurricular clubs which include the Science Olympiad Team, the Biology Olympiad Team, the Science Research Society, The Bio-Med Society, The Medical Ethics Club, and the Meteorology Club which uses our satellite weather station. The department has a long, unbroken history of winning major awards in science research, science essay and science fair contests. For example, Stuyvesant students are regularly semi-finalists and finalists in the Intel Science Talent Search competition, The Otto P. Burgdorf Student Science Research Conference sponsored by the New York Biology Teachers Association, St. John's University Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, the Manhattan Borough and New York City Science Fairs, the International Science and Engineering Fair, and the Science Olympiad. |
