The Stuyvesant High School Online Course Guide |
This course is specifically designed for junior year students who took Regents Physics as their 9th grade Regents science class.
Juniors taking this course will take SL1M in the fall semester and SL2M in the spring semester. This course will prepare the student for the Regents Living Environment examination and the SAT II Biology examination. The curriculum of SL1M and SL2M is based on the more challenging SAT II Biology curriculum. The first semester SL1M student will study topics such as the nature of living organisms, the scientific method, scientific instrumentation, taxonomy, cell structure and function, inorganic chemistry and biochemistry, the anatomy, physiology and chemistry of the human body, basic comparative anatomy and physiology between protozoans, amphibians, reptiles, mammals and humans. The second semester SL2M student will study topics such as plant structure, function, and photosynthesis, asexual reproduction of prokaryotic cells, protists and plants, sexual reproduction of animals and plants, comparative study between animals and plants, Mendelian genetics, modern genetics and molecular genetics, evolution and ecology. There is a diverse lab component. The SL1M and SL2M student will perform labs that will enhance their inquiry skills. Students will develop their basic knowledge and skills in microscopy, basic cytological staining techniques, dissection, chemical analysis, DNA technology and statistical analysis. After completion of just one semester of SL1M, a junior molecular student can take any junior biology elective or a prerequisite biology course to AP Biology in their spring semester. Completion of this course will enable a student to take AP Biology, AP Environmental Science or AP Psychology in their senior year or any other senior year biology elective.
