These courses in human diseases and microbiology will focus on parasite-host relationships, the role of vectors in epidemics, population adaptations to pathogens, history of human disease control and eradication through immunology and environmental implications to disease. Laboratory work in bacteriological techniques is included. The course are taught with lectures, discussion and labs. Students will be required to successfully complete assigned readings, labs and a major research paper. Exams are given throughout the term. There is a small fee for perishables. A suggested follow-up course would be SB5PMD. Either of these courses is one of the possible prerequisites for Hospital Internship. The courses are open to sophomores, juniors and seniors. SB3PHD1 and SB3PHD2 are not sequential. Interested students may take either or both. SB3PHD1 is given in the fall only; SB3PHD2 in the spring.
