The Stuyvesant High School Online Course Guide |
Protein Biochemistry is a one term course designed to give the student an in depth look at one of the most diverse classes of biological molecules. Once the students have explored the various levels of protein structure which determine its biological function, they will concentrate on the enzymatic function of proteins. Finally, students will apply this knowledge while learning such basic techniques of protein extraction and purification such as salting out, ion exchange chromatography, molecular sieving and enzymatic assays. This course is designed for students entering the INTEL competition, as an introduction to AP Biology or for students who want an advanced biology course without an AP exam. Suggested follow-up courses are Human Genetics (SB3PHG) or Molecular Biology (SBMB). This course is open to Juniors and Seniors only.
