Chemistry and Physics Courses

It is the goal of the Chemistry and Physics Department to provide students with a solid foundation in the physical sciences while fostering a general intrigue with these subjects. To do so, we offer a wide range of courses which include those required for graduation (Regents Chemistry and Regents Physics) along with many geared for students who have a strong interest in science

Completion of the requisite course work, traditionally in the sophomore and junior years, enables students to explore more advanced and specialized topics in elective courses like Organic Chemistry, Astronomy, and Modern Physics. There are also selective courses which require departmental approval for registration. The research classes in chemistry and physics are taken instead of the regents courses and the department invites students who have demonstrated strong academic performance in their prior science and non-science courses to enroll. The advanced placement classes are designed for those who wish to continue study in these areas and are taken by students who have above average ability in chemistry and/or physics.

The department has two annual publications, Nucleus and Sigma. Nucleus is a student run magazine which focuses on prevalent issues and recent developments in chemistry and physics. Sigma is a research magazine which presents recent student abstracts submitted for the Intel Science Talent Search competition along with a list of the speakers involved with the Stuyvesant Advanced Science Seminars. Both publications are released in the spring.

The following pages contain descriptions of our offered courses which are designed to help students out line a schedule to best meet their needs and interests.
