Who should take this
course?
This course is for those students
who are interested in Chemistry and have a basic understanding of
chemical principles. Students interested in medicine, environmental
science, biology, chemistry, biochemistry and health are encouraged
to take this course. It is a good introductory class to Organic
Chemistry for students who plan to pursue a career in either medicine
or chemistry and provides an excellent foundation for advanced
biology and chemistry courses. It is also valuable for students who want
to complete an Intel project in Organic Chemistry.
What will we be studying?
The first term of Organic Chemistry
is devoted to the study of carbon compounds. The primary emphasis of
the course will be the nomenclature and properties of organic compounds,
stereoisomerism, and reaction mechanisms. Acid/Base Chemistry as it relates
to Organic Chemistry will also be discussed.
What will be expected of
me?
You will be expected to do moderate
amounts of homework and to participate in class
discussions.
How is the course
taught?
The course will be taught by a method
combining recitation, demonstrations and class discussions of outside
reading. Currently, there is no lab component to this course.
What are the completion
requirements?
The grade in the course will be
determined based on class participation, and the grades on class
examinations and quizzes. There will be a final exam at the end of
the course.
Are there any special demands,
costs, etc?
No.

pre/co-requisites:
Pre-requisite: for sophomores, at least 95%
in SC1 or SC1H (second marking period fall term grade); for juniors and seniors,
at least 90% on the Chemistry Regents exam.
