Who should take this
course?
Anyone who is interested in learning
about astronomy.
What will we be studying?
Positional astronomy, measuring
astronomical distances and times. The motions of the earth, moon,
solar system, the sun and stars: colors, types, groupings, life
cycles, milky way galaxy, stellar oddities: black holes, quasars;
cosmology: big bang theory, historical development of astronomy,
instruments and techniques of astronomy.
What will be expected of
me?
Involved presence in class,
including: note taking, participation (asking questions, responding
to questions).
How is the course taught?
Achieving a satisfactory grade for
the course.
Grading: 1-2 tests per marking period and a final exam; notebook,
project, (if any).
Details and
pre/co-requisites:
Juniors and Seniors. For sophomores, satisfactory completion of SP2 is necessary.
Besides physics, some geometry and algebra are essential.
This one term course will be offered during both fall and spring
semesters.
