English Courses

The English Department at Stuyvesant High School presents a wide array of courses. Classes for freshmen and sophomores, which stress composition and literature, provide a solid foundation for later study. Selectives, available in later semesters, present a variety of specialized courses. Be sure to choose wisely so that you achieve a balance between writing, workshop, and literature classes.

Mission Statement: Students should not be graduated from Stuyvesant High School without studying texts in the European, American and British literature canon. E5EA (Early American Literature) and E6LA (Later American Literature) are the CORE courses for English 5 and 6. E7EB (Early British Literature) and E8LB (Later British and World Literature) are the CORE courses for English 7 and 8.

All Juniors and Seniors will be mandated to take one term of Core English either in the fall term or spring term:

For Juniors, one semester of either Early American or Later American Literature.

For Seniors, one semester of either Early British or Later British and World Literature, Shakespearean Literature, or Victorian Literature.

The following courses, all year-long except for Shakespearean Literature and Victorian Literature, will also be considered core courses:
