Health and Physical Education Courses

All freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are required to take Physical Education throughout the school year. All Physical Education classes are co-educational. Seniors are required to take one term of Physical Education. Students who have a medical excuse from Physical Education are assigned to regular physical education classes, and activities will be adapted according to the recommendation of their physicians. According to law, all students MUST report to physical education when they are scheduled to do so, regardless of the medical problem.

All students are also required to take one term of Health Education in their junior year.

 

Grades 9 and 10

Emphasis will be placed on sequential instruction and participation in team and individual sports. The program includes soccer, volleyball, football, basketball, track and field, gymnastics, recreational sports, dance, physical fitness and swimming.

Grades 11 and 12

Emphasis will be placed on lifetime sports whenever possible. Physical fitness activities, team sports strategy, step aerobics, dance, roller blading and weight training will be included in the program.

Selectives Available

PD7 Ballroom Dancing. This class is open to seniors only.

PF7X Stuy Box Aerobics. This class is open to seniors only. A workout which combines aerobics, cardiovascular performance and boxing movements. This class will improve your strength, muscle tone and endurance.

PF5A Junior Step Aerobics.This course is designed to increase endurance and performance through a popular fitness activity. The class incorporates dance moves into routines and step aerobics, during which you step on and off a small platform. This class promises to be fun and invigorating.

PF5PB Junior Polar BearThis course is designed to increase endurance through running and cross training. A major focus is to enable runners of all levels to develop long term personal goals to maximize the individual's potential.

PE7R In-Line Skating for Seniors; PE5R In-Line Skating for Juniors. Students must have their own equipment, viz. roller blades, wrist guards and helmets. A limited number of helmets are available for students who require them.

PS7 (Seniors); PS5 (Juniors). Swimming.

PS7L (Seniors); PS5L (Juniors). Lifeguard Training. Emphasis will be on Red Cross Lifeguard Training, including CPR, leading to nationally recognized certification. Students must be able to complete 500 yards (20 lengths of the pool).

PT5B Junior Basketball. This course is designed for students who already have solid basketball skills. This class will give students the opportunity to become more proficient in this sport. Rules, strategy and team play will be included.

PT5V Junior Volleyball. This course is designed for students who already have solid volleyball skills. This class will give students the opportunity to improve their skills in this activity. Team play, rules, and strategy will be included. Advanced skills and techniques will be taught.

PF7W (Seniors); PF5W (Juniors). Weight Training and Physical Fitness. This course will teach how to implement the five components of health and fitness: --strength training--weight management--cardiovascular exercise--nutrition--flexibility training. Students will learn how to develop a comprehensive individual weight training program.
