World Language Courses

Stuyvesant High School offers a broad range of world languages: French, German, *Classical Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, *Korean, Latin, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. All students must study at least one foreign language at Stuyvesant for three years. Students who enter Stuyvesant having passed the Regents Exam in a certain language must begin a new language and complete a three-year sequence in the school.

The content of the courses (Language 1-6) is derived from the New York State Syllabus, which is structured around communicative functions, topics, and situations. The content of the courses (Language 7-10) is derived by the State College Board Syllabus. Due to the nature of this school many of our courses may stress linguistic structure more then is often done today.

In French, Spanish and Latin, classes run from Level I through Level V; in German, Italian, Hebrew, **Mandarin Chinese and Japanese classes run through level IV.

*Classical Greek is offered as a one year elective.

*Korean is only offered in Level III for native speakers.

**Mandarin Chinese is offered under a two track system: one for students who are fluent in speaking and listening, but do not know how to read or write and wish to complete their foreign language requirement by taking three years of Mandarin Chinese; and the second track for students who are learning Mandarin Chinese for the first time. Students are placed by the Department.

Students who enter Stuyvesant having passed the Proficiency Exam will be awarded one year of credit in a language. After completing Level II and III and passing the appropriate Regents exam, those students will be programmed to take an additional year in the language to complete the required three-year sequence.

Basic Language Courses (Language 1-6)

The basic language courses may also be taken as electives for students who are fulfilling their graduation requirement in a different language.

Students who are proficient in a language and wish to take it as an elective must see the Assistant Principal of Foreign Languages, to be placed (if offered) in the appropriate level.
