Who should take this
course?
Current freshmen, sophomores and
juniors who wish to pursue an exciting mathematical adventure beyond
the scope of the syllabus.
What will we be studying?
We will explore interesting
applications of mathematics not discussed in the sequential
mathematics syllabus. Included are number theory, Geometer's Sketchpad, study
of Pi, the Golden Ratio, Pythagorean Theorem, and fractals. Other
topics may include crypography, origami, non-Euclidean geometry, and Pascal's triangle.
What will be expected of
me?
You will prepare a math research
paper to be submitted to the New York City Math Fair.
How is the course taught?
Each student chooses his/her own topic
and works with the math advisor to prepare an independent study
research paper.
What are the completion
requirements?
Each student will complete a math
research paper.
Are there any special demands,
costs, etc.?
Approximately $10 is needed for
supplies, poster boards, and contest fees.
Details and
pre/co-requisites:
This elective will not
fulfill your mathematics requirement. Students must have a minimum
average of 80%, and a math average of 85% to qualify.
There is a $10 lab and materials fee for the research classes. This will cover all expenses for contests, mailings, etc. Students who demonstrate a financial need may obtain a waiver by speaking with the Assistant Principal, Department of Mathematics.
