Who should take Advanced Placement European History?

Advanced Placement European History is a year long college level course designed for students entering the 10th grade. Students who are interested in history, philosophy and the arts are encouraged to apply.

What will we be studying?

The A. P. European History course is the equivalent of a college survey course in modern European history. The A. P. syllabus begins with the Renaissance and covers all of European history through the present. However, since students in the course must also prepare for the Regents Exam in Global History, the course also covers the non-Western history up to the present day.

What will be expected of me?

A. P. European History is a rigorous course that involves heavy reading in both primary and secondary sources, frequently on philosophical or other complex historical problems to which most students have had no previous exposure. Some homework assignments will be long and difficult. Students will be using a college level textbook as well as a source book of primary and secondary readings. In addition, students will be expected to write essays which require a mature writing style. Active class participation will be an indication of a student's commitment to the course.

How is the course taught?

Several teaching strategies are employed in teaching the course. Many lessons use a question/answer technique; others involve student debates, role plays, etc. Students are frequently asked to analyze documents as part of the lesson.

What are the completion requirements?

Students will be expected to complete over 100 homework assignments in the course of the year. There will be approximately 10 full period tests, five each term. Students will write a number of essays, either at home or as part of an examination. Students will be expected to take the A.P European History Exam in May.

Are there any special demands, costs, etc?

The cost of an A. P. Exam is approximately $84. Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch will receive a fee waiver reducing the cost of the exam.

Details and pre/co-requisites:

Successful completion of H1G and H2G, Social Studies average of at least 94%. This is a full year course and cannot be dropped mid-year. If you enroll in H3GX, you will automatically be programmed for H4GX.
