Wanderings: The World through the Jewish Experience HE3PJE

This course will explore modern Jewish history and culture, beginning with the early stages of the Diaspora and ending with the Modern Age. The main emphasis of this class will be on the Jews of Eastern Europe, the Great Migration and Settlement of America, Nazism and the Holocaust, the Birth of Israel, and Contemporary Jewish-American Life. The class will visit cultural and historical sites in New York City, including Ellis Island, the Lower East Side, the Tenement Museum, and the Museum of Jewish Heritage. We will also experience live Klezmer music and visit authentic Jewish restaurants. The class will be taught in the seminar style through the use of documentaries, films, novels, photography, art, and guest lecturers.
