Who should take this course?
Any student who is interested in modern China, its culture, traditions, and history.
What will we be studying?
A study of modern China from 1920 to the present through literature, film, documentaries, and original documents in translation. Topics will include the social, political and economic revolutions of Mao, Deng Xiaoping and the new leadership of China. Topics will also include Tibet, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the problem of corruption within the government, the new Chinese capitalism, and the conflict between the city and the countryside. The course will also examine the traditions and culture of China, new political and social movements, and yes, even food! This and much more is offered to you in Modern China.
What will be expected of me?
Reading original works in translation, discussion, and class presentations.
How is the course taught?
The course is taught through videos, class discussions, debates, presentations, reading of original documents in translation and excursions to cultural sites.
What are the completion requirements?
Take home examinations, class presentations and limited research on selected topics.
