Who should take this course?

Students who wish to explore careers in finance as well as students who are interested in learning techniques of investing.

What will be expected of me?

Students will be expected to complete assigned readings and questions from an advanced text in security analysis, and three books on investment techniques and finance. Additional readings will also be supplied. Students will also be expected to take part in trips and visits to Wall Street.

How is the course taught?

This course is sponsored by Merrill Lynch. Students will be provided with a calendar identifying each class session and the corresponding homework assignment. Regular class instruction will be supplemented by approximately 14 prominent guest speakers from Merrill Lynch, trips to the Merrill Lynch trading floors, the actual floor of the New York Stock Exchange, and the COMEX. Students will also have the opportunity to observe corporate CEOs' presentations during underwriting meetings at Merrill Lynch. Students will use computers at Merrill Lynch and Stuyvesant to complete portions of their work using Merrill's Equity Screen Program.

What are the completion requirements?

Students will complete homework assignments using an advanced text in security analysis, three supplementary books, and selected reprints. There will be examinations and a term project, which calls for students to demonstrate an understanding of the use of fundamental analysis in the selection of common stock.

Details:

Strong background in basic economics is recommended. Minimum Social Studies average of 88%.
