American Foreign Policy HG5PFP

Who should take this course?

Those students who are interested in Foreign Policy decisions - both past and present - and want a more in-depth understanding of circumstances surrounding policy options and decisions. Students who are open to alternative perspectives, analyzing policy doctrines and documents. Students who want to gain more knowledge of current issues and conflicts facing the US role in the world today.

What will we be studying?

The History of American Foreign Policy and its development as it relates to the origins of foreign policy, the early years of a new nation, WWI and WWII, the Cold War, the US role and policy in Asia and SE Asia, Middle East, China (past and current), and Africa.

What will be expected of me?

Students should be prepared to experience a high level of learning and analyzing past policy decisions through texts, documents, readings, debates, videos, lectures (includes attending one lecture at an outside organization). Students must be able to keep up with readings and class discussions and application of materials.

How is the course taught?

Class discussion and participation, videos, debates and conference simulations, drafting of policy options.

What are the completion requirements?

Class participation and attendance, 2 research papers, 1 term project, class debate and presentation, 1 midterm, 1 final, attend 1 outside lecture.

Are there any special demands, costs, etc.?

Be open to learning additional perspectives.

Details and pre/co-requisites:

Global History 3 and 4 are prerequisites. This is a one semester course.
