Who should take this
course?
This course is open to students
needing to fulfill their 5 period technology course requirement, or
as an elective for juniors and seniors. This course is designed for
students who are interested in learning computer hardware, operating
systems, diagnostics, and electronics related to computers. It is
highly recommended for students seeking a Computer Science
concentration.
What will we be studying?
The topics covered include:
1. History of personal computers
2. PC hardware and computer peripherals
3. How PC hardware and operating systems work together
4. Basic electronics and digital circuits related to computers
5. Computer diagnostics and maintenance
What will be expected of
me?
Daily attendance, note taking,
participation and a research paper.
How is the course taught?
Through teacher prepared lessons and laboratory experiments.
Students will use our electronic trainers to construct circuits for
experimentation and problem solving. Hands-on activities will
acquaint students with computer hardware and trouble shooting.
Special software will be used to investigate computer function and
perform diagnostic tests. Near the end of the term, students
construct and set up a computer from parts. This includes CMOS
set-up, loading the operating system, diagnosing any problems and
setting the computer up on the network.
What are the completion requirements?
1. Completion of lab experiments
2. Maintain a proper notebook
3. Research paper
4. Quizzes and formal examinations
Are there any special demands, costs, etc?
None, unless students wish to build their own computer.

There are no pre/co-requisites. This course is offered during the fall and spring semesters. This course can also be taken as an unprepared elective.
