Re: ADVANCED PLACEMENT CLASSES

• The Cabinet, after years of addressing the number of advanced placement courses students may take, recommends the following policy regarding Advanced Placement classes at Stuyvesant High School.

• Written criteria for acceptance in each Advanced Placement courses will be available to all students through the registration process and on our web site. An appeal process will be available to all students who do not meet the criteria.

• Students may apply for any course, for which they are qualified, but obviously should exercise judgement.

•Students may apply for as many Advanced Placement courses as they are eligible for, as determined by the following criteria:

1.

Any student who meets the departmental requirements for an individual Advanced Placement course will be eligible for that course regardless of the student's overall average.

2.

Students who wish to take two Advanced Placement classes must have a MINIMUM overall average of 88%.

3.

Students who wish to take three Advanced Placement classes must have a MINIMUM overall average of 93%.

4.

Students who wish to take four Advanced Placement classes must have a MINIMUM overall average of 95%.

•Students are encouraged to take no more than three (two are recommended) Advanced Placement courses at any one time.

•Students who wish to take one additional Advanced Placement class in excess of school guidelines must file a Parental Consent form with their Guidance Counselor.

•Parents of students who take more Advanced Placement classes than is recommended by school policy are required to acknowledge this and agree, in writing, that their child will not be permitted to drop any Advanced Placement classes.
